Hawaii is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and these islands are known as the string of pearls because of their tremendous beauty. Without a question the largest, most beautiful and isolated valley in the islands is Waipio Valley on the Big Island. Waipio Valley is the location of our surfing and sea kayak adventure camps. With a mile long black sand beach, river mouth and points, surfing opportunities are frequent. Mornings usually bring offshore winds down from the back of the valley and our morning surfing sessions are very fun.
Waipio valley is truly big and magnificent. Steeped by vertical cliff faces, that rise over 2000 feet, the mile and a half wide valley is three miles deep and teems with waterfalls that plummet thousands of feet into crystal clear fresh water pools. A river mouth sand bar provides excellent morning surf, the valley is so immense it produces its own weather patterns that are dominated by morning offshore breezes. That means clean surf all morning long! Body boarding and body surfing are fun choices along the endless and super remote mile long black sand beach breaks.
Afternoons are spent participating in a host of many exciting educational and cultural programs. Waipio valley is the main source of Taro for the Hawaiians and we participate in its growth/harvest and processing of this very special plant here in Hawaii. Hawaiian art forms such as basket making, lei making, rope making and tying, music and hula, as well as many others, are also taught and practiced. Hawaiian land appreciation is taught and we help local Hawaiian programs with restoration and preservation of ancient Hawaiian trails and villages.
After surfing in the mornings our afternoons are spent sea kayaking, fishing or hiking. We camp on the beach in Hawaiian style huts that are provided with water, showers, toilets and cooking facilities.
Waipio Valley is the gate way to the North Hamakua Coast which holds several uninhabited valleys mostly accessible only by sea. After a week or so of practicing with our sea kayaks we load them and head down the coast. We camp and surf remote valleys with epic waves that cleanly break across pristine reefs. Our paddle is one way, mostly with the winds, until we arrive 3 to 4 days later in Polulu Valley.
Surfing equipment is provided, we have several different types of boards. Body boarding and body surfing is also practiced and equipment provided. All camping equipment is provided. If you have your own surfing equipment bring it, if not we will have for you.
All levels of surfing and kayaking experience is welcome, we provide fun and safe instruction.
Our surfing/kayaking adventure camp is two weeks long. Day 1 and 14 are arrival and departure days, students need to make arrangements and arrive into Hilo airport. Camps start 6/16/09 and are only $1600.
